Unit 3:- The unit evaluates the requisite of heroism and the hero’s journey. Students examine which aspects of heroism are culturally defined and which aspects reflect universal archetypes. Students evaluate the archetype of a hero by comparing and contrasting it with modern icons. Utilizing Oedipus Rex, students analyze a variety of themes and possible paradoxes, including fate versus free will. Evaluating Aristotle’s tragic hero theory illuminates discussions regarding aspects of the human condition that influence cultural, social, and political norms. Students will consider the role of choice in becoming “heroes” in their own life and work to identify heroism in the 21st Century.
